To identify articles on sociology and related topics, use one or more indexing and abstracting services. Some services also index dissertations, books and book chapters, conference papers, and/or association papers. Most databases are restricted to use by faculty, staff, and students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

  • Full-text collection of popular and scholarly periodicals.

  • CQ Researcher, 1991-
  • Presents current and controversial issues with summaries, pro/con arguments, bibliographies, etc. Not actually a literature index, but the reports offer extensive information on each topic and the bibliographies can be used to find other sources.

  • Dissertation Abstracts, 1861-
  • Indexes dissertations and theses accepted at accredited institutions worldwide.

  • Annual Review of Sociology, 1975-
  • Synthesizes primary research literature and identifies the principal contributions in the field of sociology. HM15.A58 and online.

  • Contains biographical information and summaries of the work of various major theorists, as well as links to websites on a variety of sociology topics.

Data

Researchers involved in secondary analysis of data will find a vast number of machine-readable data files available for use. Likewise, there are many sources of statistical information for researchers who do not necessarily need a large quantity of data to analyze.
