Accessing Online Course Reserves

In order to access reserves, you will need a computer with Internet access that has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. All labs on campus have the required software. To view the online reserve PDF files at home you will need to have the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. The following information will assist you with downloading and installing the Adobe Reader software.

Downloading the Adobe Acrobat Reader:

Finding Reserve Files

Start at the UTK Library Catalog at:
http://www.lib.utk.edu/catalog/

In the Search Options menu at the right side of the screen, click on "Course Reserves." This will take you to a new screen. Under the orange Course Reserves bar, type in your class name and click "Go." On the list of results, click once on the class that you are looking for. This will take you to the list of reserves for the course. Click on the URL (if present) to see the full text of the reserve reading.

Both online and physical reserve items (books) are listed for your course. Look for titles marked (ONLINE) to view them from your computer. Other listings (without the word “online”) are to be found in the reserve location listed for the title:

  • Hodges Reserves – for most courses
  • AgVet Reserves – for agriculture and veterinary courses
  • Music Reserves – for music courses

Authentication

After selecting an online item from the instructor’s list, you will be prompted for your Net ID User name and password. Why? Fair use of copyrighted materials means that we must limit access to course reserves to University of Tennessee affiliates.
