Using the Laptop
Getting started
- Plug in the computer at one of these locations: Carrel 2, 3 or 4 in the Stacks area, or at the Double oak carrel in the Reference Room.
- Open the display by pushing the release button at the center front edge of the laptop to release the lock and then lift to open the display. Turn on by pushing the round power switch at the upper left of the keyboard. It may take a minute or two for the operating system to boot up completely.
Logging in to the network
- Network connectivity is provided by an internal wireless network card. When you turn the laptop on, it will connect to the network automatically, and you can access the Internet by selecting your favorite web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari).

Printing
- Please note that you must be connected
to the network in order to print.
- Printing is available directly
to the Music Library public printer located in the Music Library
Reference Room.
- The default printer for the laptops
is in the Music Library Reference Room. All printing uses the VolPrint system, for more information about VolPrint visit: http://volprint.utk.edu/.
- Ask at the service desks if you
have trouble printing.
Saving Files
- Vital information: Please save your work regularly. All documents or files saved to the desktop or hard drive of the laptop will be erased when the laptop is turned off.
Installing your own software
- You may install your own software on the laptop for the time you are using it, if the laptop will allow the installation. Not all software can be installed on the laptops, due to the security configuration. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to install or run a given program or software package on the laptop, and you will do so at your own risk. Remember, any programs installed while you are using the laptop will be erased when the laptop is turned off.
Sleep Mode
- If you close the laptop without shutting it down first, it will go into "sleep" mode. The display will turn off and the network connection will be closed. Your work will not be lost if the laptop is in sleep mode.
Turning Off the Laptop
- Remember, do not turn off the laptop until you have saved your work to a flash drive or disc, uploaded to your VolSpace, or saved in your email.
- Before you shut down the laptop, please remove any discs that you may have used with the laptop. Discs that are found in the laptops later will be placed in Lost & Found [Music Library or School of Music Office].
- All laptops must be shut down when they are returned to the Music Library Circulation Desk.
Software problems (program won't run, etc)
- Please report non-functioning software to the
staff at the Music Library Circulation Desk.
- Most applications include built-in Help functions.
Look for the Help option on the menu bar.
- If a program hangs or freezes, you can probably
fix the problem by restarting the laptop (please save your work
first if possible). You can also try using the task manager
(right click on the bar at the bottom of the screen) to close
a hung or frozen program.
